Rocks in my Head: Fathers Day: happy celebration or sinister plot to make men smell better?

By: Darryl Warren

The term “Happy Father’s Day” actually began 100 years ago after some guy got mad at his preacher for throwing off on fathers. It seems he called us a bunch of “lazy, stinking, no account, drunks.” Dang! I bet the collection plate was a little short that Sunday. However like most holidays and special “Days” that we Americans celebrate, I suspected that Hallmark had a lot to do with it becoming a holiday. Anyway, I researched Fathers Days origins and here’s what I found. Hallmark was not the REAL culprit. In reality, Richard Nixon and Calvin Coolidge were part of a continued sinister Presidential conspiracy to get men to come inside and do the one thing we hate the most, take a bath. And people thought the Watergate scandal was bad……… Well, read on brothers this is bigger.

When it began, Father’s Day did not exactly sweep the nation. Back in the day, notes Georgia State University sociologist Ralph LaRossa in his book “The Modernization of Fatherhood,” Fathers Day was mostly shunned. Mother’s Day was different – everybody loved that day from its 1908 start – but many people were suspicious of Father’s Day. Some religious leaders thought it was just a plot by the Devil to sell hats. However I suspect the plot to start “the War on B.O” was the real culprit. Simply put, men worked outside all day and smelled like pole cats. In any event, most men, who ran the country at the time and were the only ones allowed to vote, shut down this whole crazy Happy Fathers Day business. “We Ain’t Takin No Bath” became the “Tea Party” of its time.

This caused politicians to be wary of standing too close to Father’s Day festivities. President Wilson showed up in Spokane for the first holiday celebration in 1916 but sort of waved at the crowd from afar. A few years later, President Coolidge urged states to organize their own Father’s Days. Calvin Coolidge was a fat tub of lard who weighed in at over 350 lbs. He was so fat he had to have a special bathtub installed in the White House. I guess he figured if he had to take one, everybody else did. Damn, I hate politicians.

Anyhow, the holiday’s popularity built slowly over the years. In 1957, GOP Sen. Margaret Chase Smith of Maine blasted her congressional colleagues for ignoring Father’s Day, saying that to single out one parent (Mom) while ignoring the other was “the most grievous insult imaginable.” But it was not until 1971 that Congress passed a bill in favor of making Father’s Day a national holiday.

That’s where Tricky Dick Nixon comes in. At the time, his re-election campaign was ratcheting up, and I bet this looked like a political no-brainer. In response to Congress, on April 25, 1972, he issued a proclamation that officially made the third Sunday in June “an occasion for renewal of the love and gratitude we bear to our fathers.” He “declared” it as the LAW that women and children should worship fathers. Talk about abuse of power!

You see, in the Nixon household, that year’s Father’s Day was not happy at all.

First of all, America’s first dad was family less during the first Fathers Day celebration. He was hiding out from Congress in Key Biscayne, Fla. His wife was in Los Angeles. His daughters were somewhere else. This was probably just as well. Sunday, June 18, 1972 – the first government-sanctioned Father’s Day in United States history – was the day news broke about a burglary the previous night at the Democratic National Committee office in the Watergate complex.

The secrets of Watergate would eventually spill out and doom Nixon’s presidency. So in effect, Father’s Day was the real “cover-up” of the Watergate scandal. I hope he at least got a tie out of the deal.

Anyway, thanks to President Calvin Coolidge and tricky Dick Nixon, we have to take a bath, put on long pants, sit in the house with a bunch of screaming kids, and watch the Lifetime channel with our wives. I still think Hallmark has something to do with it.

So, Happy Fathers Day to all the great smelling dads in America. Special Happy Fathers Day to my daddy. My daddy is the greatest daddy in the world!

Love,

Darryl

Why can’t Golf be more like Hockey?

I love to play golf. I used to play more, but I’m old and give out, like Sling Blade. I do miss playing. Golf is the only “sport,” other than bowling, that you can smoke and drink beer while you play. It’s also the only sport that you get to keep your own score. I guess that’s pretty cool, but it’s not too appealing as an American spectator. I think watching professional golf on TV is about as exciting as watching cars go around in circles, so I usually turn it on when I need a nap, just like I do with NASCAR.

But I did stumble upon a video that gave me hope things are changing. A video by “The Golf Boys” (Ricky Fowler, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, and Ben Crane) is the greatest video by athletes since “The Super Bowl Shuffle,” by the 1985 Chicago Bears. These boys have shown the world how golf would be played if “good-ole-boy”s ran the PGA . Imagine if fans could holler during a golfers back swing! Think of the drama if Phil Michelson’s playing partner could pull a Ric Flair and talk trash after a good shot. “WOOOOO! Get some of that Phil, you fat bastard!” Talk about the perfect sport, grown men with a bag full of weapons, walking around a cow pasture drunk!

So, I propose that the PGA loosen up and let the fans have some fun during at least ONE tournament a year. Let us be American! We left Europe and created a new nation because they would not let us cuss and talk trash, why let the PGA do the same thing to us? It could only be for one tournament, pick a crappy one like the Heritage and let’s have some fun, like Bubba and the boys in the video! As for NASCAR, I’ve always said it would be awesome if one car had to drive the opposite way during the race. Now I would stay awake for that!

Check out this video and see what you think: Thanks for listening.

Allen is just one of those guys that guys like me look up to. As a kid, Allen was my friend and “bodyguard.” Once in elementary school, he kicked the crap out of some bullies who wouldn’t let me play on the swings or monkey bars. Always the biggest dude in class, Allen even yanked one kids pants down and spanked him for me. I think Allen even took some licks from the principal for administering that dose of playground justice.

Anyway, it’s a privilege to have played onstage with a guy like Allen. In High School, Allen played with The Sandcrabs at the 1980 Senior Show and we tore up some Molly Hatchet and Ac/DC. His band, Stratus, opened for Ted Nugent at the old Coluseum , and he rocked the south touring with Mark Guice and the boys from Quick Shot.

Allen’s is a hero of mine and I’m proud to be his friend of 45 years. Happy 49th birthday Allen!!! You ROCK!!!

Rocks Entertainment Magazine announces ROCKS 2.0!

by: Darryl Warren

The all new ROCKS ENTERTAINMENT 2.0 begins with our next edition, which will focus on local musicians in the Greater Gaston area. The next edition of Rocks Entertainment Magazine will feature stories and bios of the best local bands, and will answer the burning question, “Do they ROCK?”

The goal of Rocks Entertainment has always been to provide our area with a full size, full color magazine about Gaston County and its surrounding areas, and to partner with local businesses that we know and recommend. Rocks Entertainment Magazine is unique in our community because it is written and produced by locals for locals. With Rocks 2.0, we are expanding on things we do best in our community, by promoting and featuring the Piedmont areas great entertainment, our cool places to visit, and where to ROCK OUT in the Piedmont Area. With the expansion of our readership, our all new web-site, and a fresh, new focus on local entertainment, ROCKS 2.0 now provides a unique opportunity for advertisers to reach their target audience, measure their advertising dollars, and best of all, increase their business.

It’s been an incredible first year for Rocks Entertainment Magazine. The launch of the first edition featuring the Gastonia Grizzlies brought out one of the largest crowds of the year to Sims Park. Our feature story on General Johnson was reprinted in London and quoted in major print publications after his death. Belmont’s Friday Night Live has set attendance records, thanks in part to our promotional efforts and partnership with the Belmont Merchants Association. From our “Carolina Girl” contest to working with the Schiele museum and Sun-Drop for “Pirates Invade the Schiele,” as well as our “Blues, Beer, and Wine Crawl,” which raised thousands of dollars for local charities, we have been a part of all that ROCKS about the Greater Gaston area. With ROCKS 2.0, we are taking it to the next level!

As Rocks Entertainment Magazine grows, we will continue to ask one simple question in everything we print, “Does this ROCK?” Every advertiser, article, event, and picture we produce will have passed that test…IT WILL ROCK!!!

So, get ready for the new ROCKS 2.0!!! It will…well, ROCK!!!!!

I’m not sure why I’m, let’s say, “off in the head.” My parents are normal people. My brother is normal, and so is my daughter. As far as I know, that’s the only people on earth who share my gene pool. Why did I get stuck with all the “special” genes?

Just like a zebra, I can’t change my spots. So, I guess I have to accept the fact that there is something wrong with me and just try and do what everyone tells me, I need to “act right.”

Let’s break that down, shall we? The phrase implies two things. One, it implies that I am not acting right in other peoples eyes. What is “Right? What does that look like? Who determines what that is? Is there a “Right Way to Act” book?” Second, it implies that I am currently “acting wrong.” All I know is I like the way I am now. It’s not acting to me. I don’t know any other way to act…..

I’m lucky enough to have a forum like “Rocks in My Head” to speak of things from a “nuts” point of view. Most nuts just walk around in the street hollering out nonsense and pushing a shopping cart. This lets me focus my energy on shining light on people like me, those who just don’t know how to “act right!”

So, here’s a little video to give you some insight into the brain of a nut…\”Darryl\’s big forehead\”

If you’ve ever been told to “act right,” if you feel like a nut and there’s nothing you can do (or want to do) about it RISE UP AND BE COUNTED! If you have “Rocks in Your Head” STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!!! You are not alone…. You are SPECIAL!!!

love,

Darryl

The Catalinas come to Mt. Holly this friday (7pm-10pm) to ROCK in the streets for Friday Night Live. Since the Catalinas formed in Charlotte in late 1957, over 60 accomplished guitarists, keyboardists, trumpet players, drummers, bass players & singers have been a part of the band. Most have come from communities along the Interstate 77 corridor from Statesville to Charlotte.

Gary Barker, a Statesville resident, who plays guitar & sings and owns the band now, started with the band in 1965, & is still with the band after all these years. “I just did not get into my head that I was getting paid to do something I love.”

Barker attributes the band’s long success to the ongoing popularity of beach music & the tunes the band has composed, Particularly “Summertime’s Calling Me” in the 70s.

The band had its down moments including the death of lead vocalist, Tommy Black in a plane crash in 1968. Gary Barker has been the band’s glue, keeping it going even when rock & roll in the late 60s & early 70s threatened to submerge the Catalinas & beach music. The Catalinas had little choice but to play their share of Crosby, Still, Nash & Grand Funk Railroad. “You either played it or you didn’t get any work,” said Gary Barker.

Eisele, Statesville’s most recognized Elvis impersonator, credits the band’s success to its appeal to ’50 nostalgia; its “excellent musicians over the years”; its unbeatable lyrics; & the fact that the tunes are easy to dance to. “The music is good, so it endures,” said West, who now owns West Properties in downtown Statesville. “I like to see them because they’re fun.”
